Text Box: DID YOU KNOW? Although the origin of  playing cards is not really know, it is believed that they originated on China and were actually first used as currency (money!)  It is likely that the modern versions of dominos and Mahjong tiles were derived from the orignial playing cards

ACTIVITY

House of Cards

To build a house of cards follow these simple steps.  First find a deck of cards.  This is the perfect thing for that deck that's missing one or two cards.  Next find a flat surface.  Areas that aren't slippery, like a pool table or or a rubber mat on a table work best.  Be sure not to bump into your work area!  Start by taking two cards and leaning them up against each other so t he short edges touch at the top and you have created an "arrow" pointing up.  Put another one right next to it and then place a card flat along the top.  Your design so far should look like this.

Continue doing this until your house of cards is the desired length and width. Next start to duplicate the this pattern on top of the first layer.  Remember to make each new layer with one less set of cards.  See how big you can make your house of cards before it falls down!

BlackJack

by Legus

Try to get 21 or be the closest to it with out going over.  All of the number cards are worth their face value.  Jacks, Queens, and Kings are worth 10 and Aces can be a 1 or an 11.  Your choice!

CAN YOU SURVIVE?

You are in the jungle and have ended up in the grip of a python.  How do you escap?

a.  Move near water and submerge the snake until it releases its hold.

b.  Remain still to minimize the strength of the constriction.

c.  After freeing one arm, find the snake's head and jab it hard in an eye until it releases its grip.
