Remembering a Great Camper

Jordan Hughes

On January 7, 2012 our beloved camper, Jordan Hughes passed away. As an infant, Jordan received a new heart.  That transplant allowed all of us to have the honor and privilege of getting to share a part of his 13 years.

There are so many special things about Jordan that we will cherish at Hope at Heart. Jordan smiled during every activity. There wasn’t any activity (other than dancing with the girls) that Jordan didn’t enjoy or participate in to the fullest. His laugh was contagious; the sound of his sweet voice made adults instantly smile. Jordan was the type of child that Hope With Heart was founded for. He experienced every minute. He not only made friendships, he savored them. In turn, his “camp” friends stuck like glue to Jordan. Those lucky enough to have been his “cabin” mate can tell you he was the easiest camper to live with.  One talent Jordan had at camp was how well he could put our new campers at ease, almost instantly. If a new camper was in Jordan’s cabin it was a guarantee there would be no issues with fitting-in or homesickness.

There was one thing Jordan did dislike about camp- the absence of chocolate milk! Our menu has some dietary restrictions and the absence of chocolate milk was a daily conversation between Jordan and someone he thought could influence a change in this policy.  This year, at our 2012 Staff Orientation we will have a toast in Jordan’s memory. We will sip our chocolate milk and take a minute to appreciate Jordan’s life.

Jordan was not only a camper at Hope With Heart, he was our friend and we loved him dearly.  Rest in peace, dear friend. We love you and will miss you deeply.
